Shun Kumagai lives and works in Akita, Japan.

Kumagai makes objects composed of glass, soil, and metal, which conceptually bridges glass art and earthenware. Each piece is one-of-a-kind and, because of unpredictable chemical changes in the making-process, largely unexpected.

The appearance of Kumagai’s work is not only determined by his unique casting technique, but also by the infinite ways in which light falls on the objects. In the morning light they seem to almost glow from within but after the sunsets, they grow dense and still. Shun described his process as a “repetitive series of actions reminding of a prayer”.
